2012 – The Apocalypse (Again)

Mayan calendar

Mayan calendar

The new movie 2012 comes to a “theater near you” today, and the subject is the end of the world, based on actual theories that the world will end in December, 2012.  Like all of the other apocalypses which have failed to come to fruition, true believers think we’re crazy for not panicking.  What I never understood is why there is a need to panic.  If this earth is going to self destruct, there’s nothing I can do about it, so I’m just going to enjoy the ride.

The film stars John Cusack, Amanda Peet, and others, but this post is to quickly educate you on the reason some people believe 2012 will be the last time Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest will be wishing us a rockin’ new year.  The 2012 “end of the world” interpretations center around the Mayan calendar.  The current “Great Cycle” of that calendar, which lasts over 5,000 years, is scheduled to end on December 21, 2012.  Of course, trying to interpret calendars from thousands of years ago and translating them to our calendars is not a simple task (take a look at the photo above and you’ll see what I mean), and many believe 2012 isn’t even the official end of the “Great Cycle,” whatever that means.  In fact, 2003 was originally thought to be “the end.”  It is also not clear why the end of a calendar cycle suddenly means the end of the world, but crazy people need crazy theories.

Among the primary ways it is predicted our earth will end is via a planetary collision.  Scientists would see this coming years in advance1, so I don’t think you and the other billions of people on this planet need to worry just yet.  Settle down, schedule your 2012 Christmas parties without worry, and leave the apocalypse to the filmmakers.
