Unemployment Rate
Times are tough, and the unemployment rate rose to 8.1%. Bring everyone down at your party by telling them that’s the highest level since Toto won Album of the Year (1983). At least they’ll laugh at your Toto reference, then everyone can sing “Rosanna” as they cry into their beer, and you can call it a night.
If some know-it-all is still lingering around, commenting about how it seems like there are WAYYY more people without jobs than just 8.1%, remind him that the unemployment rate only takes into account unemployed workers who are actively searching for a paid job. In other words, your grandma and the “Mr. Mom” down the street don’t count. They both work hard, but they are not part of what is considered the “workforce.”
