Tallest Building Ever! For Now.
No need to worry about the silly debate about the tallest building and if antennas should count or not. You can rest easy now, Taipei 101 and Willis Tower – there’s a new champ in town.
Measuring in at a whopping 2,717 feet tall and comprising 160 stories, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai is unquestionably the world’s tallest skyscraper. Even though some of the interior hasn’t been completed, the building is now officially opened and is expected to house offices, condominiums, and even a hotel. While looks are subjective, the photos I have seen make it look quite appealing. Still, those with weak stomachs might hesitate to make the HALF-MILE elevator ride to the top. For comparison’s sake, the Burj Khalifa is 828 meters tall, while the Willis Tower is “just” 442 meters – that’s an 87% increase in height!!
Interesting note: while everyone was up in arms when the Sears Tower changed its name to Willis Tower 15 years after Sears left the building, this new building in Dubai wasted no time in making a name change. Originally scheduled to be named the Burj Dubai, the city decided to rename the structure the Burj Khalifa in honor of Abu Dhabi’s ruler, Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
