Steve Jobs Underwent Liver Transplant

LiverJust as the title suggests, while Apple CEO Steve Jobs was on medical leave the past six months, he underwent a liver transplant in Tennessee about two months ago.  According to Bloomberg.com , Jobs “was considering the procedure as a result of complications following his 2004 surgery to remove an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor.” 1  As with most things related to Apple and/or Steve Jobs, the surgery was kept under wraps until the past week.

It has been suggested that Jobs had the surgery in Tennessee because the waiting period for a new liver is low in that state.  Residency in Tennessee is not required for a liver transplant there, so it’s one of the easier ways to “jump ahead in line” legally.

Steve JobsNaturally, individuals have a right to their medical privacy, but when the individual also happens to be the CEO of a major public corporation and one whose health and ability is greatly linked to the success of the company, the public’s right to his medical condition becomes  a grey area.  The ethics and privacy issues make for a great debate because of the strong stances on both sides of the individual vs shareholders’ rights.  Read the links below and engage in this great Dinner Topic at your Father’s Day get together today!
