RadioShack – Dropping the “Radio” but Adding iPhones?
Trying desperately to stay up to date with this century which started almost a decade ago, RadioShack announced in August that they will slowly be transitioning the “Radio” part out of the name. While the naming launch occurred over two months ago, every store I have passed by recently still has the “Radio” part on the sign, so the company is taking its sweet time on the name change. Soon, that place that you only visit to buy an obscure battery or possibly some extra coax cable every few years will simply be known as The Shack.
Why is this news topical? Yesterday, it was announced that RadioShack (or The Shack, whenever they get around to changing it) will begin selling iPhones in select markets immediately and nationwide in 2010. When someone shows you their “must have” app on their iPhone tonight, you can shrug with indifference and whisper under your breath, “big deal – those things can be had from The Shack in a couple months.”
