Davos-Klosters In the News

View of Davos, Switzerland
Davos-Klosters is NOT a new flavor of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream but rather a popular ski region in Switzerland. It is in the news lately because the 2009 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting is being held there this week. According to the weforum.org website:
“The significance of the Meeting is such that more than 40 heads of state and government have already confirmed their participation in Davos-Klosters where they will join business leaders as well as NGOs, Trade Unions and experts from a wide range of fields. The Meeting will be focused on managing the current crisis and shaping the entire post-crisis agenda, from economic reform to climate change.” (Source: weforum.org)
I’m not sure what good will come out of a zillion important people meeting for five days, but at least the attempt seems genuine. Notable American leaders such as Al Gore, Bill Clinton, Howard Dean, and others are expected to be in attendance. Based on the reports from the first two days, it seems that the meetings have pointed out that the global economy is in the dumps, the reason may or may not be a failure in self-regulation, and we should be careful going forward. So, it’s everything we already knew but now we hear it from important people holed up in a ski resort.
Geography Bonus: Switzerland is sandwiched in the middle of several European countries, namely France, Germany, Austria, and Italy. Davos is located on the eastern side of Switzerland, just south of Austria.
